Frequently Asked Questions

The Order draws its inspiration from the historical life of King Athelstan, son of Edward the Elder and grandson of Alfred the Great. Athelstan became King of the Anglo-Saxons in 924 AD, and King of all the English in 927 AD, reigning until his death in 939 AD.

The Order seeks to highlight the early place of Masonry within English history, and its influence on the later development of speculative Freemasonry.

Our ritual portrays the tradition of a Master Mason being summoned to York in 926 AD to receive the Ancient Charges directly from the King.

A Master Mason who is and remains a subscribing member of both a Craft Lodge recognised by UGLE and a Royal Arch Chapter. He must be introduced, proposed and seconded by a Court Master Mason.

The Order seeks to keep fees and costs to a minimum.
There is no charitable fundraising and no Charity Steward, as we believe charitable giving is best directed through your Craft Lodge.

A small Joining Fee is payable, along with an annual subscription comparable to that of other Masonic Orders, which includes both Grand Court and Provincial Grand Court dues.
Dining fees vary by venue and are in line with those charged in Craft and Chapter.
Members are also required to purchase their own regalia, which is similarly comparable in cost to Craft regalia.

When you are “Instructed” into the Order, you will need an apron, which is similar in size and cost to a Master Mason’s apron. As with the Craft, you will need a different apron when you reach the WM chair.

The Order continues to grow, with more than 120 Courts around the world.
In England and Wales, over 90 Courts form 11 active Provinces, while new Courts flourish in Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Greece, India, Spain, South East Asia, France and the United States.
